Association of dietitians of Ukraine published the results of the study, which examined the real consumption of salt by Ukrainians with food.

It turned out that the average Ukrainian daily exceeds the recommended amount of salt almost twice - 9.7 grams instead of the allowable 5 grams (recommendation of the World Health Organization).

Men abuse more

The Association of Dietitians of Ukraine reports that men on average consume salts 17% more than women: 10.7 grams against 8.9 grams.

Where's the extra salt coming from?

According to the researchers, more than half of the salt consumed by Ukrainians (59%) comes from technologically processed foods. And here's the rest (41%) used in cooking and salting dishes.

Five dangerous foods

Nutritionists have identified five groups of products that are the main source of salt (a total of 78%) in the diet of Ukrainians:

  • bread and other flour products (43%);
  • canned vegetables (12%);
  • processed meat products (9%);
  • sweet pastries (8%);
  • processed fish and seafood (6%).

Recommendations of nutritionists and cardiologists

Reducing salt intake to the recommended 5 grams per day, doctors say, will lead to a significant reduction in cardiovascular disease and mortality from heart attacks and strokes. The choice of foods with a lower salt content, the limitation of its use in the preparation of dishes will achieve this goal.

The recipes of bread and other flour products, including sweet pastries, canned vegetables, meat and fish processed products, it is advisable to review in order to reduce the salt content.

Housewives should use less salt when preparing dishes from potatoes and eggs, soups, vegetable salads, including due to the greater use of spices and herbs for the better taste of such dishes.

In the Salt Diet Recommendations Association of dietitians of Ukraine, together with Association of Cardiologists of Ukraine, recommends instead of the usual salt in the diet use low-sodium salt (comprising 30% potassium chloride and 70% sodium chloride).
