WHO: intake of potassium for adults and children

WHO: potassium- The WHO recommends increasing consumption Potassium food for lower blood pressure and the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and coronary heart disease in adults (strong recommendation). The who recommends a potassium intake of at least 90 mmole per day (3510 mg / day) for adults (conditional recommendation).

– Who offers to increase your intake of potassium in the food for control blood pressure in children (conditional recommendation). The recommended level of potassium intake of at least 90 mmole per day should be adjusted downward for children, based on the energy needs of children in comparison with those needs in adults.

These recommendations complement the who guideline on sodium intake. They should be used with these and other guidelines and recommendations on nutrients in the development of programs and policy public health nutrition. The issue of the optimal ratio of consumption of sodium and potassium is outside the scope of this guide; however, if an individual sodium intake will meet the levels recommended in the who guideline on sodium intake, and potassium intake to meet recommendations in this guide, the ratio of sodium to potassium would be approximately one to one that is considered good for health.
