Excessive consumption of sodium salt, which is the main source of sodium, threatens health problems such as increased pressure, overweight, cardiovascular disease and stroke.
In Ukraine, at the initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO), for the first time in 2019, studies were conducted under the name STEPS. These studies have shown that 85% of Ukrainians consume sodium salts almost 3 times the norm, and Potassium consume 1.5 times less than the norm.
The WHO Regional Office for Europe established the European Sodium Salt Action Network in 2008 under the auspices of WHO and with the support of the United Kingdom Food Standards Agency (FSA). Twenty-three European countries have joined the network. Unfortunately, Ukraine, which ranked first among the large 30 countries in Europe in 2010 for deaths from cardiovascular diseases associated with excess sodium salt intake, did not join this network.
Violation of the norms of consumption of sodium and potassium lead to the retention of excess sodium in the body, increased blood volume, calcium loss, increased blood pressure. Regular violation of the norms of sodium and potassium intake leads to hypertension (arterial hypertension).
To limit the consumption of sodium salt, an international cookbook recommended by WHO has been developed, which contains recipes for appetizers, main courses and desserts - all without adding salt!
Creativity in the home kitchen with new recipes and tastes is recommended.
It may seem like the only way to add flavor to homemade dishes is with a pinch of salt, but there are many other ways to make your food taste rich, including:
- replacing salt with chilli, citrus, fresh herbs, garlic, black pepper and spices;
- Reducing the consumption of sauces such as soy sauce, ketchup and salad dressings, which may contain a lot of hidden salt;
- use of salt with reduced sodium salt content, with the addition of potassium salt.
Basically salt is SALT SYSY (even sea, stone and pink), BUT there are alternatives - salts with reduced sodium content for those who care about health.
