About 90% of Ukrainians exceed the sodium salt norm - STEPS results

2908

According to the STEPS study (a standardized method of collecting and analysing WHO data), an important problem that reduces the life of the Ukrainian population is the excess intake of sodium salt. It turned out that Ukrainians consume with food on average about 12.6 grams of salt per day, at the recommended rate of less than 5 grams.

This is evidenced by the data presented during the online presentation of the results of the STEPS study on the prevalence of risk factors for noncommunicable diseases in Ukraine - reports UNIAN.

According to the analysis, the daily salt rate exceeds 86.9% of Ukrainians.

According to the study, Ukrainians at the same time consume less necessary daily norm of fruits and vegetables - the main sources of potassium ("antagonist" sodium) in nutrition.

How was the study conducted?

This study was conducted by the World Health Organization, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Center for Public Health of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Institute of Social Research, with the support of the World Bank.

The first phase of the study took place in 2019, with 7,700 respondents between the ages of 18 and 69 interviewing and surveying. During the study, anthropometric and biochemical measurements (urine and blood tests, weight, height, etc.) were carried out.

The second phase of the study continued throughout 2020 and involved analysing the data.

Excess sodium salt and potassium deficiency nutrition is the main risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

An example of Finland

How can salt (sodium) intake be reduced to normal, while reducing the risks of cardiovascular disease by 7-10 times and reducing the incidence of hypertension without using additional funding? The Finns have proven that this is possible.

Since the 1970s, Finnish residents have been advised by nutritionists and cardiologists began to use in the diet mineralized salt, which instead of 30% of sodium salt contains salt Potassium. On the results of the multi-year population health program "North Karelia"An adviser to the Finnish Minister of Health said in a TSN story.

Affordable health for Ukrainians

In Ukraine, following the example of Finland, mineralized salt has been produced under the solena brand for more than 7 years.Salt SOLENASOLENA Healthy Food Salt, containing 30% potassium salt and 70% sodium salt, is offered in Ukrainian shops and supermarkets.

SOLENA Salt responds to its characteristics "Recommendations on salt diet" developed by the Association of Cardiology and the Association of Dietitians of Ukraine.

Unlike conventional, sodium salts such as stone, sea, Himalayan, which contain 95-98% sodium chloride (NaCl), SOLENA salt contains only about 70% sodium chloride, but contains 30% potassium chloride and other micronutrient deficiencies in nutrition.

Cheapest source of potassium

SOLENA salt is the cheapest source of scarce potassium in nutrition.
The 700g jar contains 100g of potassium, so much potassium is contained:

  • 100 kg of sea salt or 30 kg of Himalayan salt;
  • 300 bananas;
  • 5 kg of dried apricots;
  • 10 kg of raisins.

Salt with potassium is more expensive than regular sodium, but one 700g can of such salt is enough for 3.5-5 months for one person.
